Moose Calling Videos
Free video clips of how to call moose of both bulls and cows from hunters in Canada and the United States. I will explain my moose calling devices and when to use them that could help you be more successful in your moose hunts.
I will always remember one hunting trip where I decided to call a moose just before light when there wasn't a bit of wind. I was using a homemade birch bark cone and calling the cow call. After about 10 minutes I heard a crashing through the very thick bush of a slow moving bull going to investigate this female moose. To add further excitement, the bull moose started to snort about every 20 seconds. This experience was so loud and scary that it seemed like King Kong parting the trees as he crashes through the bush. Being by yourself and experiencing a moose coming to your call in my opinion is one of the greatest adrenaline rushes I have every had in my life.
Calling Devices - There are many moose calling devices on the market, but I have never purchased one. Some are electronic, but some jurisdictions will not let you use them. I'm going to recommend my favorites as they have all worked for me. Before you try moose calling in the bush during your hunting trip, you must practice well before the season.
My devices that I take with me on a moose hunt are 1. Birch bark horn for both bull and cow calls. (I have used cardboard, but it doesn't have the same sound) 2. Tin coffee can with a string. I place foam in the can so that you don't have a tin noise. I wet the string and pull down on the string. This is not my favorite, but it has worked. 2. Shoulder blade of a moose - I use this to trash the bush to draw in a stubborn bull and where it is too close to make any vocal calls. 4. Container for water - If I'm by a lake, I will sometimes pour the water into the lake or ground to mimic a cow urinating.
Here are a few steps, techniques and suggestions you can use:
Step One: If you have never called moose, heard a moose call or went moose hunting, I would highly suggest buying a DVD on moose calling sounds. There are a few on the market, but I would get one that has both bull and cow calls and one that deals with other sounds of moose. I'll explain more in some of the other steps.
Step Two: Practice, practice, practice. You need to get into the bush and practice all the techniques especially when the calling conditions are prime. Do not just stick with one call as conditions always change and not all moose act the same.
Step Three: Call only during the right conditions. This is especially true if I'm going to hunt the same area over the next few days. Good conditions include: 1. Crisp cool early mornings and an hour before dark 2. Wind is calm so the the sound can carry 3. Being in a good location such as an edge of a lake 4. Peak of a rutt 5. Using the right call and do not call excessively.
Step 4: Calling - There are several means of calling and I'll explain my system. I realize everyone has there own techniques, and I'll explain mine.
Cow Call: I almost always call the cow call unless I see a big bull in the area. I like calling the cow call because it draws in more bulls and the bulls will not normally be as aggressive approaching you. You have to be very patient as the bull will normally take it's time coming to you and may not always take the most direct path. I start out with 2 long calls and end with 2 short grunts. I do this about every 15 minutes to 1/2 hour. The cow call almost sound like a real domestic cow. It is not uncommon that you will draw in cow moose to your calls as they are very curious. That's great, because I can use them for when the bull comes. Another reason I use the cow call is if a medium size bull is already with a cow or cows, he may not want to chance fighting a big bull. He may lead his cows away from your calls.
Bull Call: If I'm having no success with the cow call, I will try the bull call. I will only do this a few times. However, if my cow call was successful in bringing a bull close to me but not close enough, I will use the bull call. I will not do it very loud as I do not want to give myself away. Caution: If you call a bull moose call, always prepare for the situation where the bull may charge the sound. Make sure you are positioned that will give you time to get off a couple shots before the moose gets you. Remember, every moose acts differently.
Thashing Bush: As mentioned earlier, I carry a moose shoulder blade with me from previous hunts. If I have a stubborn bull that my calls were not convincing enough, the blade rubbed up and down small brush like willows and alders is very effective. Be ready to shot because you will normally be fairly close to the bull at this time and you are challenging him.
Pouring Water: In combination with other calls to make the sounds in the bush that there are other moose present, you can pour water into a lake or a bucket ti simulate the sound of a urinating moose. This attracts the bull moose as it is trying to see if the cows are in estrus.
Try these techniques or others that you feel work for you you or that you are confident using. Not everyone can call moose properly, therefore, other techniques could be used. I have a few Youtube videos that show moose calling to give you an idea of what you can expect while hunting.
