Moose are generally associated with northern forests around the globe in North America, Europe, and Russia. Moose is an Algonquin word meaning twig-eater, which eats a massive amount of twigs and other browse. Moose is also known as European Elk in Europe and is the largest species in the deer family.

There are 6 subspecies of moose including European Moose, Eastern Moose, Western Moose, Siberian Moose, Alaska-Yukon Moose and Shiras Moose. The largest species is the Alaska-Yukon Moose and the smallest being the Shiras Moose found in Wyoming, Utah, Colorado and Washington.

The largest moose antlers in North America come from Alaska, the Yukon Territory, and the Northwest Territories of Canada. Moose occasionally produce trophy-size antlers when they are 6 or 7 years old, with the largest antlers grown at approximately 10 to 12 years of age.

Hunting Trip of a Lifetime -  We are not going to recommend any specific outfitter, but just provide some basic information on what to expect regarding costs. To get that big trophy moose it is highly recommended going to a well established outfitter in northern and remote areas such as the northern parts of Provinces and Territories of Canada and the State of Alaska.

Costs (In US funds) : Northern Canada 6-8 day hunts range around $6,000 to $9,000 for 1 guide with 1 hunter. In Alaska a 10 day hunt will cost about $15,000 with a 1 hunter per guide hunt. What is included and excluded in costs? Each outfitter is different, however, most outfitters include airfare from a major center in the state or province to the camp, food and lodging, guide, and preparation and care of trophy. Not included is taxidermy and shipping of trophy, airfare to the Province or State, export permits, cost of tags and gratuities. As you can see a moose hunting adventure in Alaska could cost as much as $20,000 to place that trophy on your wall.

Hunting Moose on Your Own

The best time to hunt a trophy bull is during the rut. The rut varied in the season and starts earlier the further north you go. In north central Canada you are looking at mid September to mid October, however in Alaska you are looking at the end of August to Mid September.

The best moose hunting habitats include recently burned areas that have propagated dense stands of willow, aspen and birch shrubs, on timberline plateaus, and along the major rivers.

Calling moose during the rut will produce the best results. It is best to find a moose calling DVD and practise well before the hunting season starts. I mostly use the cow moose call as it will bring in bulls of all sizes and I normally don't have to worry about a charging bull. There are many type of calling devices, but my favorite is a birch bark horn that I make myself. If I use the bull call with my birch horn, I also carry a shoulder bone the previous year successful moose hunt. The shoulder blade can be rubbed up and down small brushes or dead spruce branches to bring the bull in closer.
