Coyote is also known as the American Jackal or Prairie wolf. The coyote is an adaptable animal taking over as the predator and ranges where the wolves have been driven out. Though the coyote is much smaller than wolves and unlikely to take down a healthy adult moose or elk, they have been able to form packs and successful take down deer.

There are as many as 19 subspecies of coyotes and their sizes vary depending on the environment they live in and the food they eat. Typically the smaller coyotes are in the south desert areas and the larger species range further north where they can reach weights of over 70 pounds.

Coyotes have a variety of diets based upon the available food sources and the time of year. Food can range from small mice, voles, prairie dogs, squirrel, birds to the larger animals of deer. Their diet can also create problems for humans such as feeding on dogs, cats, chickens, sheep and other small livestock. When food is scarce, they are food around dead carcasses and scavenging around dumps. Coyotes are sometimes given the bad reputation as scavengers, but they are truly good hunters and cleaver opportunistic predators.

It the north, coyotes have been trapped for furs to be used as coats, trims and winter hats. Since the demand and prices of the furs have been down, the trapping of coyotes is very limited. This doesn't mean that coyotes are safe from humans. The past number of years, coyote hunting as a sport has increased and so has the sales of specialized coyote guns, ammunition and calls.
